Addy: An American Girl’s Story
Addy: An American Girl’s Story
The authorized American Girl’s production, written by Cheryl West and directed by Linda Hartzell, this show tells the story of a young slave girl’s path to freedom. The American Girl producers required very strict control over their intellectual property, and consequently we designed a show as historically accurate as possible.
The physical scenery, designed by Carey Wong, was a canvas for the projection design. With my co-designer Lara Kaminsky, we incorporated video and period photography. I served as principal photographer and videographer, and cued the show, while Lara edited video and did much of the period photo research. For the subsequent national tour, Lara got the show on its feet in the rehearsal venue. We both manipulated images, and we were also asked to produce printed backdrops from the period photos.
